Illustrations by Lucian Stanculescu

Today I want to share with you the work of Lucian Stanculescu, a Romanian artist living and working in France. His art is characterized by grotesque creatures populating a dream-world inspired by mythology. He creates types of metaphisical creatures whom he calls homunculi (bodies in love), narvals (marred by deep neuroses), andromedae (cathedral-women) and expresses feelings through a sculptural manipulation of the human body. In his own words: “Some people find treating profound and dark subjects in art disturbing if taken to the extreme, others find it beautiful and liberating. I fall in the last category … I can’t do cheerful and cute, it always feels somewhat unaccomplished”.
